Why cyclists are replacing sugar and sweeteners with maple

What a cyclist loses on a long ride

On a bike, the effort is often longer than running, even at moderate intensity. A 2 to 4 hour ride causes significant water and sodium loss through sweat, especially in hot weather or direct sun on the road. Without replacing these electrolytes, cramps and sudden fatigue hit faster than expected, often in the last hour, right when you need them least.

Maple, an energy and electrolyte source in a single ingredient

Most cycling drinks add their carbohydrates (refined sugar or artificial sweetener) and their electrolytes separately, in a lab. Maple syrup does both in the same ingredient: 28 g of carbohydrates and 273 mg of sodium, 94 mg of potassium and 47 mg of calcium per sachet. On a bike, where every bottle counts, having a single source for energy and hydration simplifies prep before you head out.

For which type of cyclist

Maple MC2 is designed for training rides, recreational road cycling, gravel, and weekend long rides. For rides of several hours in hot weather, adjust the concentration or supplement with an additional electrolyte source based on your own sweat loss, which varies a lot from one cyclist to another. For regular training and rides of 1 to 3 hours, it's exactly the fuel it takes.

When to drink it: before, during, after the ride

Fifteen to thirty minutes before you leave, a sachet in your bottle provides a carbohydrate base without overloading your stomach. During efforts beyond 60 minutes, one bottle per hour roughly maintains carbohydrate and sodium intake. Within the hour after arrival, a second sachet helps replace lost minerals and speeds up recovery.

Made in Quebec, certified organic

Maple MC2's maple syrup comes from the family sugar bush in Saint-Ours, Montérégie. Certified organic, with no artificial colouring or flavouring. A short, transparent ingredient list for cyclists who want to know exactly what's in their bottle.

We answer your questions

The amount depends on the duration, the heat and your sweat rate. Follow the preparation instructions on the packaging, and adjust based on your previous rides.

The function is the same (replacing carbs and electrolytes), but the source changes. A classic isotonic drink often combines refined sugar or artificial sweetener with electrolytes added separately. Maple MC2 draws both from maple syrup.

Yes, you can prepare several bottles before you leave. Keep them cool if the wait is more than a few hours before departure.

Both. Hydration and electrolyte needs are the same regardless of bike type, it mostly depends on the duration and heat of the ride.

Not entirely. On rides of several hours, your hourly carbohydrate needs exceed what a single sachet provides. Maple MC2 works well as a hydration base, combined with other energy sources on long distances.
